Depression: COPED with before CURED

It’s a terribly false and discouraging misconception that depression can be CURED. How can you cure a normal human reaction? It’s like trying to cure sadness, grief, or negative thinking. For example, is it normal to feel depressed after the death of a loved one? Of course it is! Yet some today still believe in using synthetic drugs to “cope” with this difficult time of life. However, do medications today help us to cope and sort out our feelings? Or do they do the opposite, masking emotions, or simply tranquilizing us to the point where we’re so dull we can’t feel anything? At best, these drugs trick our minds into believing there’s nothing wrong.

However, depression is a warning that something is chemically or emotionally wrong and needing adjustment. Depression will never be cured but you can develop positive strategies for success.

Whether you’re depressed because of some distressing event in your life or you can’t really think of a reason you’re depressed, you need the same thing. You need HELP. You need support to help you cope through this difficult time. You need to face and deal with the emotions inside of you through productive means that won’t mask over your depression but expose it for what it really is and work at it. The point is depression is normal. You can’t cure a normal human reaction. If you try and cover it up with medications, you delay your own healing. Negative emotions and feelings can be expressed many ways in our subconscious from overeating, drinking, becoming loud/obnoxious or even overly shy. So what is coping?

Coping is defined as

  1. to struggle or deal
  2. to face and deal with responsibilities, problems, or difficulties
  3. to contend with difficulties and act to overcome them

Coping is a part of life. We learn it from the day we are born. However, in today’s society people want a quick, easy solution to all their problems and they rely on drugs or other false promises to comfort them. The truth is our best source of comfort is ourselves and our families.

Negative ways of Coping- these are ways which only delay mental healing and add to frustration. Negative coping is anything that may try to AVOID the hurt instead of facing it.

  • Long-term Denial
  • Suppression
  • Masking over emotions (drug or alcohol abuse, excessive partying, working too much, oversleeping, taking mind-altering drugs such as anti-depressants, tranquilizers, etc. )
  • Self-destructive behaviors

Positive Ways of Coping- acknowledging our weaknesses and taking small, controlled steps towards mental and physical health. Anything that allows us to build up positive  emotions and energy.
